In third grade, a shift occurs in which students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. In the second unit of our Reader's Workshop, students work with nonfiction texts, understanding that nonfiction reading differs from fiction reading.
Some of our lessons will include:
To reinforce the strategies/skills learned at home, it is vital that students are reading nonfiction texts for nightly reading, as well as completing the journal page in the reading Homework Journal.
Fundations
We are working in Unit 2. Fundations homework is due Friday, October 20th.
Reading Homework
Students should be reading every night for at least twenty minutes. Please look for an updated Reading Log in the back of your child's blue Take Home Folder, as well as for Homework Journals in the "Return to School" side. Aside from reading a book, your child can also read on RAZ Kids and our new Digital Library (great for nonfiction reading!). Here are the links for both:

State Reading Assessment
Students will be taking their first State Reading Assessment next week on Wednesday, October 25th and Thursday, October 26th. There are two sessions to this assessment, each session lasting about 90 minutes. Students will test in the morning on both Wednesday and Thursday. Please remember that this is an end-of-third-grade assessment and this first test is to see where students currently are at this point in the year. Students will take the assessment again in April.
